Redoubt Fortress & Military Museum, Eastbourne

Postcard artist Donald McGill is best known for his saucy seaside postcards, but it is less well known that some of his most poignant postcard designs were drawn some forty years earlier during the First World War.

Disability prevented McGill from joining up himself and so he used his skills to produce as many as 6 or 7 new card designs a week. His illustrations tackle subjects such as trench life and rationing and are coupled with a humorous caption which served to boost the morale of the troops and their beloved ones left at home. This exhibition explores his wartime catalogue and is illustrated by objects from the Redoubt's own collections.
