Twinning Association

The most frequently asked question is, “How did Peacehaven become linked with these two Towns in mainland Europe?” Well, East Sussex, via the County Council, were linked to the Dept. of Essone in France. The Town of Epinay-sous-Senart was already twinned with Isernhagen in Germany but was seeking a partnership with an English Town on the South Coast.
Peacehaven’s County Councillor, while visiting Isernhagen, heard of the French need and suggested to a former Town Council that a link be forged. The Council decided to proceed, but only with the French Town so on October 9th, 1982, a Charter was signed by former Mayor, Bill Parris and the French Mayor, Pierre Bonningue.
The ceremony was attended by a delegation from Isernhagen who persuaded Peacehaven of the value of including their Town. In 1983 Peacehaven twinned with Isernhagen and thus became the first town in England to form a triangular link.
For the next four years the Town Council took sole responsibility for matters relating to twinning but with the formation of the Peacehaven & District Twinning Association the development of links moved into the hands of the Towns people. Twinning members continue to enjoy social events, language courses, fund raising, travelling to other Towns and hosting families from our Twin Towns. The representative for the Council is Cllr.
